Michael Sturtz is a sculptor, fabricator, educator, fire ballet director, and the designer (and rider) of the world's fastest biodiesel motorcycle.

Michael defies labels and conventions with a body of creative work that is wide-ranging and continually evolving. In directing and producing over a half dozen fire ballets and operas, he has brought the excitement and power of the industrial arts from the studio onto the stage. He plays with similar juxtapositions in his design and sculptural work, bringing together the biological and the mechanical in a delicate, yet dynamic dance.

Michael lead a team named the Diesel Dozen, which designed and build the world's first biodiesel land speed motorcycle. Michael rode the bike to a 100% bio-fueled land speed record of over 130mph.

In addition to his professional and artistic successes, Michael is a passionate educator. As founder and former Executive Director of The Crucible in Oakland, CA. During his 12 years there, he created a unique educational setting which serves over 8000 students annually and offers classes in subjects ranging from welding and blacksmithing to ceramics and glass.

Founded by Jeanne Gang in 1997 and based in Chicago, Studio Gang is a collective of architects, designers, and thinkers producing transformative architecture. Their studio’'s work is based on compelling ideas rather than repetitive formal principles.

Ms. Gang's practice acts as a lab for testing ideas on varying scales: from cities to environments to individual buildings’ unique material properties. This open and collaborative approach enables owners to participate in the design process, making choices as the project develops. Driven by curiosity, intelligence, and radical creativity, Studio Gang's process yields provocative and alluring architecture that responds to its specific place and purpose—exemplified by such recent projects as the Aqua Tower, SOS Children’s Village Community Center, Brick Weave House, and Lincoln Park Zoo South Pond.

The work of Studio Gang has received national and international recognition and has been published and exhibited widely. The Aqua Tower was named the 2009 International Skyscraper of the Year, and the firm has exhibited at the International Venice Biennale, the National Building Museum, and the Art Institute of Chicago. A recent documentary about Aqua and Studio Gang was produced by the Checkerboard Film Foundation as part of their acclaimed Architecture Series.

As a Partner and Creative Director at IDEO, Jane plays a global leadership role, evolving content and craft, human insight, and design thinking in support of client projects worldwide. She came to design from psychology and architecture with the ambition to integrate social science-based perspectives into design practice — and to foster a collaborative community of kindred spirits.

Jane is the author of Thoughtless Acts? Observations on Intuitive Design (Chronicle Books, 2005), a book of snapshots that depict the subtle and amusing ways in which people interact with the world. Jane believes that design, like life, is about seeking creative harmonies with elements of our world.

The lecture will be held on Thursday evening, January 27th at 7PM at Pigott Hall (Building 260) Room 113.

Featured in Fast Company's Top 100 Most Creative People in 2010, Neri is an architect, Assistant Professor of Media, Arts and Sciences at the MIT Media Lab, and newly-appointed Director of the Mediated Matter Group.

Join us as Neri discusses her pioneering work at the technological forefront of design and explores the material intersection between architecture, engineering, computation, and ecology. Inspired by nature, her research seeks to integrate morphology, behavior, material and structure by combining computational form-finding strategies with biologically inspired fabrication technologies.

The lecture will begin at 6PM on Monday, October 4th in the d.school atrium in building 550 at Stanford University.

In a change of format, this Spring's Liu Lecture will feature a panel discussion that brings together the founders of some of the most innovative design firms and initiatives in the world.

Moderated by renown design author and lecturer Dr. Barry Katz, the panelists will discuss their answers to Alessandro Mendini's 1980 question: "What objects have the moral right to enter the 21st century?" Needless to say, this should be a lively one.

As always, the Liu Lectures are free and open to the public thanks to the generous support of Dr. and Mrs. Liu.

Gadi Amit (NewDealDesign)

Gadi Amit is the principal designer and founder of NewDealDesign. Gadi runs NewDeal hands-on, with great attention to the project strategy and goals, down to the finest details. His award-winning work has been featured in many design publications and exhibited at the Chicago Athenaeum, Cooper Hewitt-National Design Museum and San Francisco MOMA. Gadi is also a frequent jurist in Design panels, most on ID magazine, Fortune magazine and California Design Biennial. Prior to founding NewDeal, Gadi was with frogdesign for nearly seven years, ending as the Vice President of Design. He has extensive experience in consumer electronics, mobile and personal computing, household goods, and commercial and medical technology industries.

Robbert Brunner (Ammunition)
After graduating in industrial design from San Jose State University in 1981, Robert co-founded the design consultancy Lunar. Subsequently, he was hired as Director of Industrial Design for Apple Computer where he served for 7 years. In
1996, he was appointed partner in the international firm Pentagram, helping lead the San Francisco office. In 2006, Brunner and entrepreneur Alex Siow launched the start-up Fuego, a new concept in outdoor grilling. In 2007, Robert founded Ammunition, focusing on the overlap between product design, brand and experience. He continues to lead Ammunition and Fuego concurrently.

In 2008, Robert co-authored the book Do you matter? How great design will make people love your company with Success Built to Last author Stewart Emery. He also teaches advanced product design at Stanford University

Valerie Casey (The Designers Accord)
Valerie Casey is a globally recognized designer and innovator. She consults with start-ups, governments, and organizations all over the world on challenges ranging from creating new products and services, to transforming organizational processes and behaviors.

Before starting her own practice, Casey held executive leadership positions at IDEO, frog design, and Pentagram. Her work has been highlighted in multiple publications, and she has been named a “Guru you should know” by Fortune magazine, a “Hero of the Environment” by Time magazine, and a “Master of Design” by Fast Company. She was also selected as one of the “World’s Most Influential Designers” by BusinessWeek.

Casey is the founder and Executive Director of the Designers Accord, the global coalition of designers, educators, and business leaders focused on creating positive social and environmental impact.

Casey speaks globally on systems thinking, cultural change, and sustainability , and is an Adjunct Professor in the graduate design program at CCA. She holds a master's degree in cultural theory and design from Yale University and a BA from Swarthmore College.

Dan Harden (Whipsaw)
Dan is Principal and chief designer of Whipsaw Inc. A consumer designer and prolific creator, Dan has been an industrial designer for 27 years and has designed hundreds of hit products. He has been honored internationally, winning over 100 design awards, including many Red Dot, GMark, IDEA, ID Mag, IF, and MDEA awards. He has also been granted over 150 patents. Dan's views and work have been featured in Axis, Business Week, CNN, Design (UK), Design Report, Domus, Fast Company, Form, Fortune, ID Magazine, Metropolis, Newsweek, New York Times, Nikkei Design, PBS Television, San Francisco Chronicle, Time, The Wall Street Journal and Wired.

Several of Dan's creations are in the permanent collection at the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design, the Pasadena Museum of CA Art, and the Smithsonian's Cooper Hewitt Design Museum.

Prior to founding Whipsaw in 1999, Dan was the President of frogdesign, where he helped build frog into one of the world's top design firms. Before joining frog in 1989, Dan worked at Henry Dreyfuss Associates in NYC, and Dolphin Design in Germany. In the early 80's, Dan worked with design master George Nelson and interned at Hewlett Packard and Richardson Smith. Dan graduated from the University of Cincinnati, College of Design, Architecture, and Art in 1982

Dr. Barry Katz (Stanford - Moderator)
Barry Katz was educated at McGill University in Montréal, the London School of Economics, and holds a doctorate from the University of California at Santa Cruz. He is a professor of Humanities and Design at California College of the Arts, consulting professor of mechanical engineering at Stanford University, and fellow at IDEO, Silicon Valley’s leading design and innovation consultancy.

Earlier books of Katz include Herbert Marcuse and the Art of Liberation (Verso), Foreign Intelligence: Research and Analysis in the Office of Strategic Services, 1942–1945 (Harvard), and Technology and Culture: A Historical Romance (Stanford). More recently he has coauthored Change By Design, with Tim Brown, a book on design thinking, and with Branko Lukic, an exploration of Design Fictions. A new book, Tectonic Shift: The Unstable History of Silicon Valley Design, is forthcoming from MIT Press.

Katz has served as executive editor of the Design Book Review and contributing editor to I.D. and Metropolis magazines, and his writings on the history and philosophy of design have appeared in many academic, professional, and popular journals.

The lecture series is and has always been free and open to the public, so grab your colleagues, friends, relatives, significant others, neighbors, and anyone else you know and come on down for an evening of fascination and inspiration.

MAIRA KALMAN
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 3RD, 6:00PM in Braun Hall (Bldg. 320) Room 105

Maira Kalman's inspired illustrations have become widely known and loved through the myriad extensions of her storytelling talent. Kalman's work has frequented the covers of the New Yorker, most notably an illustration called New Yorkistan, which depicts the boroughs of New York City with neighborhoods named with their cultural descriptors (e.g. "Central Parkistan" and "Botoxia.") The New York Times has been home to Kalman's illustrated storytelling column including the current "And the Pursuit of Happiness" and the former "Principles of Uncertainty," which has been published in book form. She has authored 12 books for children (or fresh-minded adults) and brought to life a illustrated version of Strunk and White's foundational "Elements of Style."

Beyond the printed page, Maira and her late husband Tibur Kalman have brought their singular perspective to the design of watches, clocks, and accessories under the name M&Co, which are currently distributed by the Museum of Modern Art.

In addition to her continued contribution to print, Maira Kalman teaches graduate Design at the School of Visual Arts and is the cofounder and member of the Rubber Band Society, a group sharing a love for rubber bands.

GENEVIEVE BELL

Named one of the top 50 most creative people in Business (Fast Company,) Genevieve Bell is an Intel Fellow and director of the User Experience Group within the Intel Digital Home Group.

Bell joined Intel in 1998 and has come to lead an R&D team of social scientists, interaction designers and human factors engineers to drive human-centric product innovation in Intel's consumer electronics business. In this role she is responsible for setting research directions, conducting comparative qualitative and quantitative research globally, leading new product strategy and definition, and championing consumer-centric innovation and thinking across the company.

Prior to joining Intel, Bell was a lecturer in the Department of Anthropology at Stanford University. She has written more than 25 journal articles and book chapters on a range of subjects focused on the intersection of technology and society. Her book, "Telling Techno-Cultural Tales," co-authored with Prof. Paul Dourish, is being published by MIT Press.

Raised in Australia, Bell received her bachelor's degree in anthropology from Bryn Mawr College in 1990. She received her master's and doctorate degrees in anthropology from Stanford University in 1993 and 1998, respectively.

BEN FRY
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 18TH, 6:00PM in Herrin T175

Ben Fry is director of Seed Visualization and its Phyllotaxis Lab, a design laboratory in Cambridge, Massachusetts focused on understanding complex data.

Fry received his doctoral degree from the Aesthetics + Computation Group at the MIT Media Laboratory, where his research focused on combining fields such as computer science, statistics, graphic design, and data visualization as a means for understanding information. After completing his thesis, he spent time developing tools for visualization of genetic data as a postdoc with Eric Lander at the Eli & Edythe L. Broad Insitute of MIT & Harvard. During the 2006-2007 school year, Ben was the Nierenberg Chair of Design for the Carnegie Mellon School of Design. At the end of 2007, he finished writing Visualizing Data for O'Reilly.

With Casey Reas of UCLA, he currently develops Processing, an open source programming environment for teaching computational design and sketching interactive media software that won a Golden Nica from the Prix Ars Electronica in 2005. The project also received the 2005 Interactive Design prize from the Tokyo Type Director's Club. In 2006, Fry received a New Media Fellowship from the Rockefeller Foundation to support the project. Processing was also featured in the 2006 Cooper-Hewitt Design Triennial. In 2007, Reas and Fry published Processing: A Programming Handbook for Visual Designers and Artists with MIT Press. Processing 1.0 was released in November 2008, and is used by tens of thousands of people every week.

Fry's personal work has shown at the Whitney Biennial in 2002 and the Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial in 2003. Other pieces have appeared in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, at Ars Electronica in Linz, Austria and in the films Minority Report and The Hulk. His information graphics have also illustrated articles for the journal Nature, New York Magazine, The New York Times, Seed, and Communications of the ACM.

The client list is diverse: from fringe (Napster, Doc Martens, Pabst Blue Ribbon, Jones Soda, Red Stripe, Altoids) to cutting edge (Current TV, New Yorker Magazine) to blue chip (Diageo, IBM, P&G/Clorox, Toyota, Coca-Cola). Projects range from innovative strategy, innovative research, meaningful creative expressions with DIY production to brand innovation. In earlier work, Wipperfürth had interviewed actual cult members and people in "consumer cults" (like Apple or Harley-Davidson fanatics) and made fascinating insights about their similarities.

We're honored to present Dr. Jon Cagan as the next speaker in the Liu Lecture Series! Dr. Cagan is the director of Carnegie Mellon University's graduate program in Product Development and a distinguished professor in the department of Mechanical Engineering. Cagan has written two fantastic books on the topic of product development: Creating Breakthrough Products and The Design of Things to Come. Both books skillfully navigate the arc from the fuzzy front end of product development all the way up to program approval. The texts also bridge the chasm between qualitative and quantitative values in a way that is actually understandable. His Liu Lecture will be about the emerging research in the creative Design process and the role of emotion in product usage.

An Emerging Cognitive and Emotional Basis for Design Innovation

Emerging research is uncovering the cognitive basis of creative design and the emotional basis of product usage. This talk will present studies in both of these areas. From the perspective of how designers create innovative solutions, we will look at a series of cognitive studies that uncover how designers utilize both useful and misleading information while carrying open goals of unsolved design problems. From the perspective of the person using the product, emotion plays a critical role. We will examine new methods to capture aesthetic preferences and agent-based computational tools that use those preferences to guide generation of preferred design forms.

I'm really excited to present the lineup for this Spring's David H. Liu Memorial Lecture Series in Design.

All talks will begin at 8pm in building 320, room 105. Every lecture is free and open to the public!

Andy Spade will be speaking on Wednesday, April 15th. Spade had over a decade of experience with top advertising agencies Saatchi & Saatchi, Kirshenbaum Bond & Partners, and TBWA/Chiat/Day managing accounts with companies such as Coca Cola, Evian, Reebok, Lexus, and Coach. He's the branding and marketing man behind Kate Spade and Jack Spade (the companies that he and his wife created.) He has also been tapped to design the experiences of a number of companies including Delta's Song Airlines and J. Crew retail experiment The Liquor Store. Spade's latest project is Partners & Spade. It includes a highly conceptual retail experience in downtown Manhattan. Beyond all these business ventures, Spade is heavily involved in the art world. He is a patron to emerging artists, co-owner of a gallery, and curator of several exhibitions. Spade's projects merge emotional branding, experience design, brilliant collaboration, and always a touch of surrealism.

Dr. Jonathan Cagan will be speaking on Monday, May 4th. Dr. Cagan is a co-director of the Masters in Product Development program at Carnegie Mellon and also the co-director for the school's Center for Product Strategy and Innovation. He has the title of Barrett Ladd Professor in Engineering in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University and holds appointments in the School of Design and Computer Science. He has expertise in product development and innovation methods for early stage product development. Both his design methods and computer-based design research have been applied in a variety of industries. Dr. Cagan is the author of two books: Creating Breakthrough Products (co-authored with Craig Vogel), and The Design of Things to Come (co-authored with Peter Boatwright and Craig Vogel). He has consulted with a variety of small and large companies in diverse areas on product development, brand strategy, and strategic planning. He is co-founder and chief technologist of DesignAdvance Systems, Inc., a company focused on developing CAD software for the early synthesis processes. Cagan teaches New Product Development at Carnegie Mellon and runs executive training sessions in small and large companies.

Stefan Sagmeister is one of the most influential graphic designers in the world working today. Since 1993 Sagmeister Inc., has focused on all things printed, including posters, brochures, books, and graphics and packaging for music clients.
